Sauna is linked to longer life. The dose matters.
People say: “Sauna is a longevity hack” We read the study.
Cohort study. 2,315 people. 20.7 years median follow-up.
People were watched for years. Nobody was told what to do. A clue, not proof.
Who: Middle-aged men (42-60 years, mean 53) from Eastern Finland (Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study), baseline 1984-1989
- 4–7× vs 1× a week-40%
- 2–3× vs 1× a week-24%
- Sessions over 19 minheart only
More to know, from our read of the paper:
- Observational cohort: association, not causation; the paper notes 'potential for residual confounding remains as with all observational studies'
- Men only (Finnish); authors say similar studies are needed in women and in people not used to regular sauna bathing
- Sauna habits self-reported via a one-time questionnaire at baseline (no repeat measurement; regression dilution not corrected)
- Only 201 men in the 4-7/week group (62 deaths), so confidence intervals are wide
- Session duration (>19 min) was NOT linked to lower all-cause mortality, only to cardiac/CVD deaths
Linked to longer life. Not proven.
- Go often, not longFrequency tracked overall death risk.
- Start at 2–3× a weekAlready linked to 24% lower risk.
- It was hot, dry saunaAbout 79°C, Finnish style.
2,315 middle-aged Finnish men reported their sauna habits and were followed for about 20 years. 4–7 sessions a week was linked to 40% lower death risk than once a week, and 2–3 sessions to 24% lower. Longer sessions were linked to fewer heart deaths, but not fewer deaths overall. Men only, self-reported: linked, not proven.
