More sleep didn't cost these teens exercise. It cost sitting.
People say: “Extra sleep has to come from somewhere” We read the study.
Randomised controlled trial (RCT). 43 people. two one-week conditions during the school year, separated by a one-month washout; data collected 2018-2023.
A trial. Chance decided who did what.
Who: US adolescents (Colorado), 14-19 years, mean age 16.0, 69.8% female, 86% White; habitually short sleepers (<=7 h on school nights, confirmed by actigraphy), habitually inactive (<3 h regular physical activity per week), healthy weight (BMI 5th-95th percentile)
- Sleep per night+81 minweekday average
- Sitting time-72 minmostly evenings
- Brisk exercisenoneno clear change
More to know, from our read of the paper:
- Small (43 teens), mostly White and female, all short-sleeping and inactive: results may not apply to other teens or adults
- Only one week of extra sleep; health outcomes (weight, blood pressure, mood) were NOT measured. The authors' health benefits come from earlier simulation models, not from this trial
- Secondary analysis that pooled two protocols: 24 teens had sleep extension alone, 19 also got 500 mcg melatonin and morning light-therapy glasses (ReTimer). Sitting results were similar in both (-68 and -70 min), but say 'some also got melatonin and light glasses'
- Light activity also fell by 13 min/day (p = 0.048), not significant within either protocol; authors call a <15 min change likely not clinically significant. Don't hide it, don't hype it
- Brisk (moderate-to-vigorous) activity was low to begin with (~34 min/day), which limits how much change could be seen (authors' limitation). Say 'no clear change', never 'sleep doesn't affect exercise'
Extra sleep replaced sitting, not exercise.
- Plan an earlier bedtimeBedtimes moved 77 min earlier.
- Keep your workoutsBrisk activity held steady.
43 US teens who slept 7 hours or less and exercised under 3 hours a week tried one normal school week and one week with an earlier bedtime, in random order (a crossover trial). Some also got melatonin and morning light glasses. Trackers showed they slept about 81 minutes more a night, sat 72 minutes less a day (mostly in the evening), and brisk exercise did not clearly change. Light activity dipped about 13 minutes, a small change. Health effects were not measured in this one-week trial.

The Effect of an Experimental Sleep Extension Manipulation on Timing and Duration of Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity in Habitually Short-Sleeping and Inactive Adolescents: Results from a Randomized Crossover Trial. Sleep Health.
Design: Randomised controlled trial (RCT) · randomized crossover trial (secondary analysis of NCT03500458): one week of typical school-week sleep vs one week of sleep extension (>=1 h more time in bed each school night), counterbalanced order, one-month washout; sleep and activity measured with devices
